Runner’s World calls the October 17, 2010 IMT Des Moines Marathon a ‘must’ on the fall calendar. Race Day features the IMT Des Moines Marathon, Half Marathon, Marathon Relay and Principal Financial Group 5K Road Race. All races start and finish at Nollen Plaza in downtown Des Moines. Spectators are welcome and volunteers are needed. Don’t forget to attend the free two day Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield Sports & Fitness Expo featuring Jeff Galloway. EAP – Sports Performance Camp for Kids!

This program is based upon successful and innovative training techniques that have been used to help players maximize their abilities from youth to the professional level. Every athlete will be given a training packet with resistance training exercises, speed and agility drills, and nutrition information to help maximize results and develop an understanding of strength and conditioning.
This camp is designed for ages 8 and up and will focus on improving each athlete’s speed/agility, core strength, flexibility, linear speed, and overall strength. Each camp participant will undergo a pre/post assessment to aid in measuring their individual improvement over the training period. The assessment includes: Height/Weight, Body Fat Measurements, and a NFL combine testing for speed and agility including L-drill, agility shuttle, 40yd dash, and vertical jump. All pre assessment testing will be done during the first session.
Camp Dates
Session 1: June 7th – June 30th – Monday & Wednesday @ 8:00 am – 9:15 am
Session 2: July 19th – August 11th – Monday & Wednesday @ 8:00 am – 9:15 am
*More times may be added based upon the number of athletes enrolled.
Cost
Session 1 (May 30th Deadline): $145.00 for members and $160.00 for non-members

Asian Chicken and Orzo Salad

* 1 (9-ounce) package frozen sugar snap peas
* 1 (16-ounce) package orzo, cooked and drained
* 1 cup water chestnuts, drained and chopped
* 3 cups diced cooked chicken
* 3 green onions, chopped
* 1 medium red bell pepper, diced
* 1/2 cup vegetable oil
* 3 tablespoons rice wine vinegar
* 2 tablespoons soy sauce
* 2 teaspoons hoisin sauce
* 1 (2-ounce) package slivered almonds, toasted (1/2 cup)
Directions
Cook sugar snap peas according to package directions; drain well.
In a large bowl, combine sugar snap peas, orzo, water chestnuts, chicken, green onion, and red bell pepper. In a small bowl, whisk together oil, vinegar, soy sauce, and hoisin sauce. Pour over orzo mixture, tossing gently to coat. Stir in toasted almonds. Cover and chill until ready to serve.

Cherry, Almond, and Cinnamon Granola

* 4 cups old-fashioned rolled oats
* 2 cups sweetened, shredded coconut
* 2 cups sliced almonds
* 1 1/2 cups dried cherries, chopped
* 1/2 cup vegetable oil
* 1/3 cup good honey
* 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
Directions
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Toss the oats, coconut, almonds, and cherries together in a large bowl. Pour the vegetable oil and honey over the oat mixture. Add the cinnamon, and stir with a wooden spoon until all the oats and nuts are coated with the liquids. Pour onto a sheet pan. Bake, stirring occasionally with a spatula, until the mixture turns a nice, even golden brown, about 25 to 30 minutes.
Remove the granola from the oven and allow to cool, stirring occasionally. Store the cooled granola in an airtight container.
